A bank balance is a promise from your bank; self-custodied bitcoin is controlled directly by your keys. Compare freezing, supply, fees and reversals.
What a bank balance really is
Your bank balance is a number in your bank's database: a promise that the bank owes you that money. The bank can freeze it, reverse payments, or limit withdrawals, and it decides who can open an account.
What holding bitcoin is
Bitcoin you hold yourself isn't owed to you by anyone. It's recorded on the public blockchain as spendable by your keys. Nobody can move it without those keys, and nobody can stop you moving it if you have them.
| Bank money | Bitcoin (self-custody) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who keeps the record | Your bank | Every node |
| Who can freeze it | The bank or authorities | No one, without your keys |
| Supply | Can grow over time | Fixed at about 21 million |
| Reversals | Possible (chargebacks) | Not after confirmation |
| Opening hours | Business days, cut-off times | Always on, 24/7 |
| If you lose access | The bank can reset your password | Lost keys mean lost coins |
The trade-off
Self-custody gives you control, but also full responsibility. There is no help desk if you lose your seed phrase. Many people keep bitcoin on an exchange, which works more like a bank account. See Self-custody vs custodial.
Moving money abroad
Sending money internationally through banks can take days and pass through several intermediaries, each taking a fee and able to delay it. A Bitcoin payment costs the same to a neighbour or another continent, settles in about the same time, and works on weekends and holidays.
Where banks are better
To be fair:
- Mistakes can be fixed. Banks can reverse fraud; Bitcoin can't.
- Deposit insurance protects many bank balances; nothing insures self-custodied bitcoin.
- Price stability: a bank balance holds its face value; bitcoin's price moves a lot.
Many people use both: a bank for daily spending, bitcoin as savings they control themselves.
Key takeaways
- A bank balance is the bank's promise; self-custodied bitcoin is controlled directly by your keys.
- Confirmed Bitcoin payments can't be reversed or frozen by a third party.
- With control comes responsibility: lost keys can't be recovered.
Common questions
Is bitcoin on an exchange the same as owning bitcoin?
Not quite. The exchange holds the keys and owes you the balance, much like a bank.
Can a Bitcoin payment be refunded?
Only if the receiver sends a new payment back. There is no built-in chargeback.
Can the government freeze my bitcoin?
Bitcoin held with your own keys can't be frozen on the network. Bitcoin held on an exchange can be frozen by the exchange.
Are Bitcoin payments cheaper than bank transfers?
Often for international payments. Fees depend on how busy the network is, not on the amount or the distance.
