Who created Bitcoin?

Bitcoin was launched in 2009 by Satoshi Nakamoto, a pseudonym that has never been linked to a proven identity. Here is what is actually known.

Satoshi Nakamoto

In October 2008 a person or group using the name Satoshi Nakamoto published a nine-page paper describing "a peer-to-peer electronic cash system". In January 2009 they released the first Bitcoin software and mined the first block.

What happened next

  • January 2009: the The genesis block is mined. Days later, in block 170, Satoshi sends 10 BTC to developer Hal Finney, the first person-to-person bitcoin transaction.
  • May 2010: Laszlo Hanyecz pays 10,000 BTC for two pizzas, often cited as the first purchase of physical goods.
  • Late 2010: Satoshi hands over the project to other developers and stops posting publicly in early 2011.

Does it matter who Satoshi is?

Not for how Bitcoin works. The software is open source, the rules are enforced by every node, and changes need wide agreement among users. Satoshi has no special power over the network today.

EXAMPLE

The first transaction between two people

In block 170, transaction f4184fc5… sends 10 BTC to Hal Finney and 40 BTC back to Satoshi as change. Fee: 0. Our node verified it.

What we know about Satoshi

  • Wrote the whitepaper and the first version of the software.
  • Posted on forums and mailing lists from 2008 to 2010, mostly about technical details.
  • Used British spellings in some posts, and posted at times that suggest no single obvious time zone.
  • Handed control of the code repository to other developers in 2010 and stopped posting in 2011.

What we don't know

Satoshi's real name, nationality and whether Satoshi was one person or a group. Several people have claimed to be Satoshi; none has produced the cryptographic proof that would settle it, such as signing a message with keys from the earliest blocks.

Why it doesn't matter for how Bitcoin works

Even if Satoshi returned, they couldn't change the rules. Every node decides which software to run. See What does decentralized mean in Bitcoin? and Consensus rules.

  • Satoshi's real identity is unknown.
  • Satoshi has no special control over the network today.

Common questions

Is Satoshi Nakamoto a real name?

It is generally believed to be a pseudonym. Several people have been suggested or have claimed to be Satoshi, but none has been proven.

How many bitcoin did Satoshi mine?

Estimates based on early mining patterns suggest around a million bitcoin, most of it never moved. These are estimates, not facts confirmed on-chain.

Could Satoshi prove who they are?

A valid signature could demonstrate control of a particular private key. It would not by itself prove the signer’s real-world identity or that Satoshi mined the associated coins.

Is Satoshi's bitcoin ever moved?

Coins widely attributed to Satoshi's early mining have stayed unspent. Attribution is an estimate based on mining patterns.
