1# NetBSD Build Guide3Bitcoin Core is supported on all [supported NetBSD releases](https://www.netbsd.org/releases/).5This guide describes how to build bitcoind, command-line utilities, and GUI on the latest release.7## Preparation9### 1. Install Required Dependencies11Install the required dependencies the usual way you [install software on NetBSD](https://www.netbsd.org/docs/guide/en/chap-boot.html#chap-boot-pkgsrc).12The example commands below use `pkgin`.14```bash15pkgin install git cmake boost16```18SQLite is required for the wallet:20```bash21pkgin install sqlite322```24To build Bitcoin Core without the wallet, use `-DENABLE_WALLET=OFF`.26Cap'n Proto is needed for IPC functionality (see [multiprocess.md](multiprocess.md)):28```bash29pkgin install capnproto pkgconf30```32Compile with `-DENABLE_IPC=OFF` if you do not need IPC functionality.34See [dependencies.md](dependencies.md) for a complete overview.36### 2. Clone Bitcoin Repo38Clone the Bitcoin Core repository to a directory. All build scripts and commands will run from this directory.40```bash41git clone https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin.git42```44### 3. Install Optional Dependencies46#### GUI Dependencies47###### Qt649Bitcoin Core includes a GUI built with the cross-platform Qt Framework. To compile the GUI, we need to install50the necessary parts of Qt, the libqrencode and pass `-DBUILD_GUI=ON`. Skip if you don't intend to use the GUI.52```bash53pkgin install qt6-qtbase qt6-qttools54```56###### libqrencode58The GUI will be able to encode addresses in QR codes unless this feature is explicitly disabled. To install libqrencode, run:60```bash61pkgin install qrencode62```64Otherwise, if you don't need QR encoding support, use the `-DWITH_QRENCODE=OFF` option to disable this feature in order to compile the GUI.66#### Notifications67###### ZeroMQ69Bitcoin Core can provide notifications via ZeroMQ. To compile ZMQ support, install the following dependency and pass `-DWITH_ZMQ=ON` when configuring.70```bash71pkgin install zeromq pkgconf72```74#### Test Suite Dependencies76There is an included test suite that is useful for testing code changes when developing.77To run the test suite (recommended), you will need to have Python 3 installed:79```bash80pkgin install python313 py313-zmq lsof81```83When the `lsof` binary package was built for a different point release, it might be necessary to force its installation as follows:85```bash86echo "CHECK_OSABI=no" >> /etc/pkg_install.conf87pkgin install lsof88```90## Building Bitcoin Core92### 1. Configuration94There are many ways to configure Bitcoin Core. Here is an example that95explicitly disables the wallet and GUI:97```bash98cmake -B build -DENABLE_WALLET=OFF -DBUILD_GUI=OFF99```101Run `cmake -B build -LH` to see the full list of available options.103### 2. Compile105Build and run the tests:107```bash108cmake --build build # Append "-j N" for N parallel jobs.109ctest --test-dir build # Append "-j N" for N parallel tests.110```
